How to clean with your senior parents

12:00am | & Tips and Advice

Getting older doesn’t mean they are incapable of doing everyday things as they used too they just need a little bit of help sometimes.

Having a clean house is beneficial especially if your loved ones or yourself have asthma, allergies, or any health concerns. One thing to do is make a list of when everything needs to be done.

Look into having a housekeeper come in

If you need more help look for a housekeeper to come in and do the work for you. This can be beneficial if your loved ones are not able or just don’t want to. It’s also helpful for you if you don’t have all the time to do all the housework and you rather use that time to spend with your senior loves ones.

Non-weight bearing tasks

If your senior loved ones wish to do most of the work make sure it’s not anything that has too much weight. Too much weight on their joints can, later on, hurt them after they have completed the task. Tell them you don’t mind coming and helping them do it so they do not feel like they have to do everything on their own.

Remove all clutter from the floors that could cause someone to trip

Make sure that the floors are cleaned when you come to see your loved ones so that there are no hazards in the way of their walking. It might be hard for them to bend down and get anything from the floor. You might want to change the cleaning supplies that are in their home such as have a broom and dustpans so that it has a handle that way they do not have to bend down.

Share with them the 1-minute rule

The 1-minute rule is that is something takes 60 sec or less just to do them before it becomes a bigger mess. Such as putting a dish in the dishwasher or put a load of laundry to wash. Simple things that your senior loved ones already know but a reminder of how easy it is might help keep the house tidy.

Don’t do it all in one day

Your loved ones are not incapable of helping and cleaning but for them, it can become tiring to do everything in one day. So schedule out when things need to be done that is too hard for them to do themselves. That way you can come and assist them so they do not get hurt or feel exhausted from the physical activity.

Cleaning with your senior loved ones doesn’t have to be a challenge that you have to worry about on if they will get hurt. With simple steps, you and your loved ones can keep their home clean and safe for their health.
