Earth Day 2025—10 Fun, Eco-Friendly Ways to Make a Difference #OurPowerOurPlanet

12:00am | & Tips and Advice

From the depths of the murky, mysterious ocean to the heights of the glistening, ice-glazed mountain peaks, planet Earth is beautiful and brimming with life.

It not only mesmerises us with its beauty, but it provides us with a home, graciously gifting us with life.

This is why we must do our part to take care of the planet that takes care of us.

This Earth Day, let’s pay our respects to the world that sustains us by fighting to sustain it with these 10 fun and environmentally friendly activities that you can do with the whole family.

What is Earth Day?

Earth Day is a day designated each year towards raising awareness and putting a spotlight on important environmental issues.

When is Earth Day?

Earth Day is on 22 April every year.

This year, in 2025, Earth Day is on a Tuesday.

How did Earth Day Begin?

The original Earth Day came about in 1970 by U.S senator and environmentalist Gaylord Nelson in an effort to raise awareness of the importance of clean air and water shortly after a disastrous oil spill in California in 1969.

During the event, an impressive 20 million people across the United States, or about 10 percent of the population at the time, took to the streets to support the cause.

Eventually, Earth Day progressed into an international campaign in 1990, and since then, the world comes together on this special day every year to remind us of the importance of protecting and taking care of our planet.

What is the Theme for Earth Day 2025?

The theme for Earth Day 2025 is “Our Power, Our Planet," which is a call for everyone—from corporations to individuals— “to unite around renewable energy so we can triple clean electricity by 2030.”

10 Fun, Family-Friendly Activities to Go Green and Celebrate Earth Day

1. Plant a Tree

Beyond the natural beauty of a tree in full bloom, trees provide us with oxygen, cleaner air and water, wood, shelter for wildlife, shade, and fruit.

With all of the benefits and beauty that trees provide us with, the least we can do is plant more of them, allowing them to flourish.

Grab your loved ones on Earth Day and choose a nice spot on your property to plant a tree together. Watch over time as your tiny, sprouting seed grows into a strong and sturdy tree.

2. Get Some Fresh Air—Enjoy Earth’s Beauty

Though we may take our planet for granted as we go about our daily lives, Earth Day is the perfect day to step away from the chaos and noise and enjoy the beauty of nature.

Whether this means hiking along a nature trail with your loved ones, walking barefoot through the sand in the beachy breeze, birdwatching from your backyard, enjoying a picnic lunch in the park (remember to clean up afterward), or simply basking in the sun and breathing in the fresh air, everyone can find an enjoyable way to appreciate Earth’s natural beauty and the life that it provides us.

3. Start Your Own Garden

Not only does a lush garden produce gorgeous flowers and fresh fruits and vegetables that contribute to the balance of nature (and to your dinner table), but gardening is also a fun activity that can involve the whole family and has been proven to lower stress levels and improve mental health.

Do some research to decide what plants you would like to grow, as well as which plants grow best in your climate.

Gather some gardening tools, your loved ones, and reap the benefits of growing your own garden and reconnecting with nature.

4. Clean Up Your Community

Use Earth Day as an opportunity to give back to your community and environment by cleaning up litter and trash.

Gather a group of friends, a litter picker, some trash bags, and gloves, and pick a location to transform.

When you are finished, not only will you feel like a good philanthropist, but you will be able to admire the fruits of your labour—from a sparkling clean riverbank to an immaculate park.

5. Join or Organise a Local Climate Action Event

Earth Day is a perfect opportunity to become more engaged with environmental issues in your community.

Look for local events like climate rallies, educational workshops, sustainability fairs, or tree planting initiatives. Don’t see anything happening near you? Consider organising a simple event of your own, whether it’s a cleanup day at a local park or a sustainability talk at your library or school.

These community efforts highlight the idea that when people work together, small actions can lead to big change.

6. Practise Recycling and Reusing

Every day is a good day to practise reusing and recycling materials, but Earth Day is a great opportunity to learn, as well as educate others, about how to recycle, what can be recycled, and the importance of recycling for the environment.

Search through your trash for anything that can be recycled and sort all of the recyclable goods into different piles of plastic, glass, paper, metals, electronics, and batteries.

Reusing/ repurposing these materials is also a good option that cuts back on waste.

7. Start a Zero-Waste or Low-Waste Challenge

Living more sustainably starts with simple changes.

Try committing to a zero-waste or low-waste challenge in honour of Earth Day.

That might mean avoiding single-use plastics, shopping secondhand, repurposing items instead of throwing them away, or starting a compost pile at home. You can also host a swap event with friends or family to exchange clothes, books, or household items instead of buying new.

These habits help reduce landfill waste and promote a more circular, mindful way of living.

8. Choose Greener Transportation Options

Transportation is one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions globally.

This Earth Day, make an effort to reduce your carbon footprint by walking, biking, carpooling, or using public transportation whenever possible.

If you’re in the market for a new vehicle, consider researching electric or hybrid options. Encouraging your workplace or school to support alternative commuting options can also help pave the way for broader change.

9. Switch to Renewable Energy or Support Clean Energy Campaigns

One of the most direct ways to reduce your carbon footprint is by transitioning to renewable energy.

If your utility provider offers the option, consider signing up for green energy from wind or solar sources. If that’s not available, you can still support clean energy efforts by donating to organizations that promote sustainable energy infrastructure or by advocating for energy policy reform in your area.

This aligns closely with this year’s focus on empowering people to lead the shift toward a clean energy future.

10. Advocate for Environmental Policy

Earth Day isn’t just about what we do in our personal lives—It’s also a time to speak up for broader change.

Consider contacting your local or national representatives and urging them to support environmental legislation, such as clean air regulations, climate action plans, or protections for endangered habitats. You can also join local environmental groups or coalitions to stay informed and get involved in advocacy efforts.

Even sharing facts and calls to action on social media using the hashtag #OurPowerOurPlanet can help raise awareness and inspire others to take action.
